Mixed numbers and improper fractions

A mixed number is a number that has a whole number part and a fraction part.  For example, 1 1/6 is a mixed number.

When you look at the picture of the sandwiches above, you can see that each sandwich is cut into 4 pieces.  There are 2 whole sandwiches, they have all 4 pieces still.  The third sandwich isn't whole. It has 3 out of 4 pieces, or is 3/4 of a sandwich.  We would write this as 2 3/4

An improper fraction is a fraction that shows a greater amount than one whole.  The numerator is greater than the denominator.  For example, 3/2 is an improper fraction.

If we look at the picture of the sandwiches again, we can also write this as an improper fraction.  It takes 4 pieces to make an entire sandwich, so 4 is our denominator.  If I count how many pieces of sandwich there are in the picture, I will see that there are 11 pieces.  So therefore I can write the fraction as 11/4
