Converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

To convert from a mixed number to an improper fraction we can either draw a picture, or use multiplication.

If I have the mixed number 2 3/4 I can multiply the whole number, 2, by the denominator, 4, to get 8, then I need to add the numerator in.  So I get 8 + 3 = 11.  I leave the denominator of 4 the same.  so I end up with 11/4.

To draw 2 3/4, look at the following picture:

Each square is cut into 4 pieces.  If I count the colored in pieces, or how many pieces I have, there are 11 shaded in pieces.  It takes 4 pieces to make an entire square, so I have 11/4 pieces.
